Yahoo Search Team recently took a different approach when compiling data for the top search trends of 2007. Instead of just releasing a plain vanilla list of the top 100 search terms of 2007 which is usually overpowered with celebrities and their meltdowns, Yahoo engineers mined the data to discover more interesting trends about how society searches as Graham Mudd from Yahoo! Search explains here. This year, Yahoo included search data from their popular social bookmarking site del.icio.us that they purchased in 2005.

If you ever had a search term appear on Yahoo’s Buzz then you are well aware of the traffic it can deliver. Yahoo! Buzz senior editor, Vera Chan, also recently discussed the culture of search. I recently had a search term that made Yahoo’ Today’s Top Searches list and although it didn’t make their top trends of 2007 list, it gave me thousands more unique visitors for that day.

The top trends of 2007 can have a large impact on 2008 and beyond. But if you’re looking to start a new web site based on trends, it will be like playing the stock market for search terms.

Yahoo top trends of 2007 were broken down into nine categories that included:
top 10 news stories
top 10 environmental searches
top 10 troubled stars
top 10 in tech
top 10 consumer call-backs
top 10 sports news
top 10 send-offs
top 10 on del.icio.us
top 10 on Yahoo! Kids

In most cases the top trends are what is in the news and is the latest water cooler buzz. For others it’s because their company and products are well known and are marketed well. Now I can only wish that search term of mine would permanently stay a daily buzz. :) Remember, search engine trends are important and worth keeping an eye on.
